Job
42 Then Job replied to the Lord:
2 “I know that you can do all things;(A)
no purpose of yours can be thwarted.(B)
3 You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’(C)
Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me to know.(D)
4 “You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.’(E)
5 My ears had heard of you(F)
but now my eyes have seen you.(G)
6 Therefore I despise myself(H)
and repent(I) in dust and ashes.”(J)
Epilogue
7 After the Lord had said these things to Job(K), he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “I am angry with you and your two friends,(L) because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.(M) 8 So now take seven bulls and seven rams(N) and go to my servant Job(O) and sacrifice a burnt offering(P) for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer(Q) and not deal with you according to your folly.(R) You have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.”(S) 9 So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite(T) did what the Lord told them; and the Lord accepted Job’s prayer.(U)
10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes(V) and gave him twice as much as he had before.(W) 11 All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before(X) came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the Lord had brought on him,(Y) and each one gave him a piece of silver[a] and a gold ring.
12 The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. 13 And he also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. 15 Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers.
16 After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. 17 And so Job died, an old man and full of years.(Z)
BOOK I
Psalms 1–41
Psalm 1
1 Blessed is the one(AA)
who does not walk(AB) in step with the wicked(AC)
or stand in the way(AD) that sinners take(AE)
or sit(AF) in the company of mockers,(AG)
2 but whose delight(AH) is in the law of the Lord,(AI)
and who meditates(AJ) on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree(AK) planted by streams(AL) of water,(AM)
which yields its fruit(AN) in season
and whose leaf(AO) does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.(AP)
4 Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff(AQ)
that the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand(AR) in the judgment,(AS)
nor sinners in the assembly(AT) of the righteous.
6 For the Lord watches over(AU) the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.(AV)
Psalm 2
1 Why do the nations conspire[b]
and the peoples plot(AW) in vain?
2 The kings(AX) of the earth rise up
and the rulers band together
against the Lord and against his anointed,(AY) saying,
3 “Let us break their chains(AZ)
and throw off their shackles.”(BA)
4 The One enthroned(BB) in heaven laughs;(BC)
the Lord scoffs at them.
5 He rebukes them in his anger(BD)
and terrifies them in his wrath,(BE) saying,
6 “I have installed my king(BF)
on Zion,(BG) my holy mountain.(BH)”
7 I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:
He said to me, “You are my son;(BI)
today I have become your father.(BJ)
8 Ask me,
and I will make the nations(BK) your inheritance,(BL)
the ends of the earth(BM) your possession.
9 You will break them with a rod of iron[c];(BN)
you will dash them to pieces(BO) like pottery.(BP)”
10 Therefore, you kings, be wise;(BQ)
be warned, you rulers(BR) of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear(BS)
and celebrate his rule(BT) with trembling.(BU)
12 Kiss his son,(BV) or he will be angry
and your way will lead to your destruction,
for his wrath(BW) can flare up in a moment.
Blessed(BX) are all who take refuge(BY) in him.

my glory, the One who lifts my head high.(CC)
4 I call out to the Lord,(CD)
and he answers me from his holy mountain.(CE)
5 I lie down and sleep;(CF)
I wake again,(CG) because the Lord sustains me.
6 I will not fear(CH) though tens of thousands
assail me on every side.(CI)
7 Arise,(CJ) Lord!

Strike(CL) all my enemies on the jaw;
break the teeth(CM) of the wicked.

toward your holy temple.(DV)
8 Lead me, Lord, in your righteousness(DW)
because of my enemies—
make your way straight(DX) before me.
9 Not a word from their mouth can be trusted;
their heart is filled with malice.
Their throat is an open grave;(DY)
with their tongues they tell lies.(DZ)
10 Declare them guilty, O God!
Let their intrigues be their downfall.
Banish them for their many sins,(EA)
for they have rebelled(EB) against you.
11 But let all who take refuge in you be glad;
let them ever sing for joy.(EC)
Spread your protection over them,
that those who love your name(ED) may rejoice in you.(EE)
12 Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous;(EF)

and rip me to pieces with no one to rescue(FH) me.
3 Lord my God, if I have done this
and there is guilt on my hands(FI)—
4 if I have repaid my ally with evil

33 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;(SI)
he causes me to stand on the heights.(SJ)

to the Lord, but he did not answer.(SX)
42 I beat them as fine as windblown dust;(SY)
I trampled them[ap] like mud in the streets.
43 You have delivered me from the attacks of the people;
you have made me the head of nations.(SZ)
People I did not know(TA) now serve me,
44 foreigners(TB) cower before me;
as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.
45 They all lose heart;(TC)
they come trembling(TD) from their strongholds.(TE)
46 The Lord lives!(TF) Praise be to my Rock!(TG)
Exalted be God(TH) my Savior!(TI)
47 He is the God who avenges(TJ) me,

48 who saves(TL) me from my enemies.(TM)
You exalted me above my foes;
from a violent man(TN) you rescued me.
49 Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;(TO)
I will sing(TP) the praises of your name.(TQ)
50 He gives his king great victories;
he shows unfailing love to his anointed,(TR)
to David(TS) and to his descendants forever.(TT)

1 The heavens(TU) declare(TV) the glory of God;(TW)
the skies(TX) proclaim the work of his hands.(TY)
2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.(TZ)
3 They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
4 Yet their voice[ar] goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.(UA)
In the heavens God has pitched a tent(UB) for the sun.(UC)
5 It is like a bridegroom(UD) coming out of his chamber,(UE)
like a champion(UF) rejoicing to run his course.
6 It rises at one end of the heavens(UG)
and makes its circuit to the other;(UH)
nothing is deprived of its warmth.
7 The law of the Lord(UI) is perfect,(UJ)

making wise the simple.(UM)
8 The precepts of the Lord are right,(UN)

10 They are more precious than gold,(US)
than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,(UT)
than honey from the honeycomb.(UU)
11 By them your servant is warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
12 But who can discern their own errors?
Forgive my hidden faults.(UV)
13 Keep your servant also from willful sins;(UW)
may they not rule over me.(UX)
Then I will be blameless,(UY)
innocent of great transgression.
14 May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
be pleasing(UZ) in your sight,
Lord, my Rock(VA) and my Redeemer.(VB)

6 Now this I know:
The Lord gives victory to his anointed.(VQ)
He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary
with the victorious power of his right hand.(VR)
7 Some trust in chariots(VS) and some in horses,(VT)
but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.(VU)

you will burn them up as in a blazing furnace.
The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath,
and his fire will consume them.(WO)
10 You will destroy their descendants from the earth,
their posterity from mankind.(WP)
11 Though they plot evil(WQ) against you

8 “He trusts in the Lord,” they say,
“let the Lord rescue him.(XM)
Let him deliver him,(XN)

9 Yet you brought me out of the womb;(XP)
you made me trust(XQ) in you, even at my mother’s breast.
10 From birth(XR) I was cast on you;
from my mother’s womb you have been my God.
12 Many bulls(XV) surround me;(XW)
strong bulls of Bashan(XX) encircle me.
13 Roaring lions(XY) that tear their prey(XZ)
open their mouths wide(YA) against me.
14 I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint.(YB)
My heart has turned to wax;(YC)
it has melted(YD) within me.
15 My mouth[az] is dried up like a potsherd,(YE)
and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;(YF)
you lay me in the dust(YG) of death.
16 Dogs(YH) surround me,
a pack of villains encircles me;
they pierce[ba](YI) my hands and my feet.
17 All my bones are on display;
people stare(YJ) and gloat over me.(YK)
