my heart will not fear;(BY)
though war break out against me,
even then I will be confident.(BZ)
4 One thing(CA) I ask from the Lord,
this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,(CB)
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek him in his temple.
5 For in the day of trouble(CC)
he will keep me safe(CD) in his dwelling;
he will hide me(CE) in the shelter of his sacred tent
and set me high upon a rock.(CF)
6 Then my head will be exalted(CG)
above the enemies who surround me;(CH)
at his sacred tent I will sacrifice(CI) with shouts of joy;(CJ)
I will sing(CK) and make music(CL) to the Lord.
7 Hear my voice(CM) when I call, Lord;
be merciful to me and answer me.(CN)

14 Wait(DA) for the Lord;
be strong(DB) and take heart

with those who do evil,

but harbor malice in their hearts.(DI)
4 Repay them for their deeds
and for their evil work;
repay them for what their hands have done(DJ)
and bring back on them what they deserve.(DK)
5 Because they have no regard for the deeds of the Lord

he will tear them down
and never build them up again.

weeping(FH) may stay for the night,
but rejoicing comes in the morning.(FI)
6 When I felt secure, I said,
“I will never be shaken.”(FJ)
7 Lord, when you favored me,
you made my royal mountain[j] stand firm;
but when you hid your face,(FK)
I was dismayed.
8 To you, Lord, I called;
to the Lord I cried for mercy:
9 “What is gained if I am silenced,
if I go down to the pit?(FL)
Will the dust praise you?
Will it proclaim your faithfulness?(FM)
10 Hear,(FN) Lord, and be merciful to me;(FO)
Lord, be my help.(FP)”

but have set my feet in a spacious place.(GN)
9 Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress;(GO)
my eyes grow weak with sorrow,(GP)
my soul and body(GQ) with grief.
10 My life is consumed by anguish(GR)
and my years by groaning;(GS)
my strength fails(GT) because of my affliction,[l](GU)
and my bones grow weak.(GV)
11 Because of all my enemies,(GW)
I am the utter contempt(GX) of my neighbors(GY)
and an object of dread to my closest friends—
those who see me on the street flee from me.
12 I am forgotten as though I were dead;(GZ)
I have become like broken pottery.
13 For I hear many whispering,(HA)
“Terror on every side!”(HB)
They conspire against me(HC)
and plot to take my life.(HD)

for I have cried out to you;

18 Let their lying lips(HK) be silenced,
for with pride and contempt
they speak arrogantly(HL) against the righteous.
19 How abundant are the good things(HM)
that you have stored up for those who fear you,
that you bestow in the sight of all,(HN)
on those who take refuge(HO) in you.
20 In the shelter(HP) of your presence you hide(HQ) them

3 When I kept silent,(IF)
my bones wasted away(IG)
through my groaning(IH) all day long.
4 For day and night
your hand was heavy(II) on me;
my strength was sapped(IJ)
as in the heat of summer.[n]
5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you
and did not cover up my iniquity.(IK)
I said, “I will confess(IL)
my transgressions(IM) to the Lord.”
And you forgave
the guilt of my sin.(IN)
6 Therefore let all the faithful pray to you
while you may be found;(IO)
surely the rising(IP) of the mighty waters(IQ)
will not reach them.(IR)
7 You are my hiding place;(IS)
you will protect me from trouble(IT)
and surround me with songs of deliverance.(IU)
8 I will instruct(IV) you and teach you(IW) in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my loving eye on(IX) you.
9 Do not be like the horse or the mule,
which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle(IY)
or they will not come to you.
10 Many are the woes of the wicked,(IZ)

9 For he spoke, and it came to be;
he commanded,(JW) and it stood firm.

all who live on earth—
15 he who forms(KI) the hearts of all,
who considers everything they do.(KJ)
16 No king is saved by the size of his army;(KK)
no warrior escapes by his great strength.

on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,(KN)
19 to deliver them from death(KO)
and keep them alive in famine.(KP)

14 Turn from evil and do good;(LS)
seek peace(LT) and pursue it.
15 The eyes of the Lord(LU) are on the righteous,(LV)
and his ears are attentive(LW) to their cry;
16 but the face of the Lord is against(LX) those who do evil,(LY)
to blot out their name(LZ) from the earth.
17 The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears(MA) them;
he delivers them from all their troubles.

fight(MK) against those who fight against me.
2 Take up shield(ML) and armor;
arise(MM) and come to my aid.(MN)
3 Brandish spear(MO) and javelin[r](MP)
against those who pursue me.
Say to me,
“I am your salvation.(MQ)”
4 May those who seek my life(MR)
be disgraced(MS) and put to shame;(MT)
may those who plot my ruin
be turned back(MU) in dismay.
5 May they be like chaff(MV) before the wind,
with the angel of the Lord(MW) driving them away;
6 may their path be dark and slippery,
with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.
7 Since they hid their net(MX) for me without cause(MY)
and without cause dug a pit(MZ) for me,
8 may ruin overtake them by surprise—(NA)
may the net they hid entangle them,
may they fall into the pit,(NB) to their ruin.
9 Then my soul will rejoice(NC) in the Lord
and delight in his salvation.(ND)
10 My whole being will exclaim,
“Who is like you,(NE) Lord?
You rescue the poor from those too strong(NF) for them,
the poor and needy(NG) from those who rob them.”
11 Ruthless witnesses(NH) come forward;
they question me on things I know nothing about.
12 They repay me evil for good(NI)
and leave me like one bereaved.
13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth(NJ)
and humbled myself with fasting.(NK)
When my prayers returned to me unanswered,
14 I went about mourning(NL)
as though for my friend or brother.
I bowed my head in grief
as though weeping for my mother.
15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;(NM)
assailants gathered against me without my knowledge.
They slandered(NN) me without ceasing.
16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked;[s](NO)
they gnashed their teeth(NP) at me.
17 How long,(NQ) Lord, will you look on?
Rescue me from their ravages,
my precious life(NR) from these lions.(NS)
18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly;(NT)
among the throngs(NU) I will praise you.(NV)
19 Do not let those gloat over me
who are my enemies(NW) without cause;
do not let those who hate me without reason(NX)
maliciously wink the eye.(NY)
20 They do not speak peaceably,
but devise false accusations(NZ)
against those who live quietly in the land.
21 They sneer(OA) at me and say, “Aha! Aha!(OB)
With our own eyes we have seen it.”
22 Lord, you have seen(OC) this; do not be silent.
Do not be far(OD) from me, Lord.
23 Awake,(OE) and rise(OF) to my defense!
Contend(OG) for me, my God and Lord.
24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, Lord my God;
do not let them gloat(OH) over me.
25 Do not let them think, “Aha,(OI) just what we wanted!”
or say, “We have swallowed him up.”(OJ)
26 May all who gloat(OK) over my distress(OL)
be put to shame(OM) and confusion;
may all who exalt themselves over me(ON)
be clothed with shame and disgrace.
27 May those who delight in my vindication(OO)
shout for joy(OP) and gladness;
may they always say, “The Lord be exalted,
who delights(OQ) in the well-being of his servant.”(OR)

2 In their own eyes they flatter themselves
too much to detect or hate their sin.(OX)
3 The words of their mouths(OY) are wicked and deceitful;(OZ)
they fail to act wisely(PA) or do good.(PB)
4 Even on their beds they plot evil;(PC)
they commit themselves to a sinful course(PD)
and do not reject what is wrong.(PE)
5 Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,

though you look for them, they will not be found.

and bend the bow(QZ)
to bring down the poor and needy,(RA)
to slay those whose ways are upright.
15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts,(RB)
and their bows will be broken.(RC)
16 Better the little that the righteous have
than the wealth(RD) of many wicked;

but the Lord upholds(RF) the righteous.
18 The blameless spend their days under the Lord’s care,(RG)
and their inheritance will endure forever.(RH)
19 In times of disaster they will not wither;

of the one who delights(RO) in him;
24 though he may stumble, he will not fall,(RP)
for the Lord upholds(RQ) him with his hand.

or their children begging(RS) bread.
26 They are always generous and lend freely;(RT)
their children will be a blessing.[w](RU)
27 Turn from evil and do good;(RV)

2 Your arrows(TB) have pierced me,
and your hand has come down on me.
3 Because of your wrath there is no health(TC) in my body;
there is no soundness in my bones(TD) because of my sin.
4 My guilt has overwhelmed(TE) me
like a burden too heavy to bear.(TF)
5 My wounds(TG) fester and are loathsome(TH)
because of my sinful folly.(TI)
6 I am bowed down(TJ) and brought very low;
all day long I go about mourning.(TK)
7 My back is filled with searing pain;(TL)
there is no health(TM) in my body.
8 I am feeble and utterly crushed;(TN)
I groan(TO) in anguish of heart.(TP)
9 All my longings(TQ) lie open before you, Lord;
my sighing(TR) is not hidden from you.
10 My heart pounds,(TS) my strength fails(TT) me;
even the light has gone from my eyes.(TU)
11 My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds;(TV)
my neighbors stay far away.
12 Those who want to kill me set their traps,(TW)
those who would harm me talk of my ruin;(TX)
all day long they scheme and lie.(TY)
13 I am like the deaf, who cannot hear,(TZ)
like the mute, who cannot speak;
14 I have become like one who does not hear,
whose mouth can offer no reply.
15 Lord, I wait(UA) for you;
you will answer,(UB) Lord my God.
16 For I said, “Do not let them gloat(UC)
or exalt themselves over me when my feet slip.”(UD)
17 For I am about to fall,(UE)
and my pain(UF) is ever with me.
18 I confess my iniquity;(UG)
I am troubled by my sin.
19 Many have become my enemies(UH) without cause[ab];
those who hate me(UI) without reason(UJ) are numerous.
20 Those who repay my good with evil(UK)
lodge accusations(UL) against me,
though I seek only to do what is good.
21 Lord, do not forsake me;(UM)
do not be far(UN) from me, my God.
22 Come quickly(UO) to help me,(UP)
my Lord and my Savior.(UQ)
Psalm 39[ac]
For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.
1 I said, “I will watch my ways(UR)
and keep my tongue from sin;(US)
I will put a muzzle on my mouth(UT)
while in the presence of the wicked.”
2 So I remained utterly silent,(UU)
not even saying anything good.
But my anguish(UV) increased;
3 my heart grew hot(UW) within me.
While I meditated,(UX) the fire(UY) burned;
then I spoke with my tongue:
4 “Show me, Lord, my life’s end
and the number of my days;(UZ)
let me know how fleeting(VA) my life is.(VB)
5 You have made my days(VC) a mere handbreadth;
the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,(VD)
even those who seem secure.[ad]
6 “Surely everyone goes around(VE) like a mere phantom;(VF)
in vain they rush about,(VG) heaping up wealth(VH)
without knowing whose it will finally be.(VI)
7 “But now, Lord, what do I look for?
My hope is in you.(VJ)
8 Save me(VK) from all my transgressions;(VL)
do not make me the scorn(VM) of fools.
9 I was silent;(VN) I would not open my mouth,(VO)
for you are the one who has done this.(VP)
10 Remove your scourge from me;
I am overcome by the blow(VQ) of your hand.(VR)
11 When you rebuke(VS) and discipline(VT) anyone for their sin,
you consume(VU) their wealth like a moth(VV)—
surely everyone is but a breath.(VW)
12 “Hear my prayer, Lord,
listen to my cry for help;(VX)
do not be deaf(VY) to my weeping.(VZ)
I dwell with you as a foreigner,(WA)
a stranger,(WB) as all my ancestors were.(WC)
13 Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again
before I depart and am no more.”(WD)
Psalm 40[ae](WE)
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.
1 I waited patiently(WF) for the Lord;
he turned to me and heard my cry.(WG)
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,(WH)
out of the mud(WI) and mire;(WJ)
he set my feet(WK) on a rock(WL)
and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 He put a new song(WM) in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord(WN)
and put their trust(WO) in him.
4 Blessed is the one(WP)
who trusts in the Lord,(WQ)
who does not look to the proud,(WR)
to those who turn aside to false gods.[af](WS)
5 Many, Lord my God,
are the wonders(WT) you have done,
the things you planned for us.
None can compare(WU) with you;
were I to speak and tell of your deeds,
they would be too many(WV) to declare.
6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—(WW)
but my ears you have opened[ag]—(WX)
burnt offerings(WY) and sin offerings[ah] you did not require.
7 Then I said, “Here I am, I have come—
it is written about me in the scroll.[ai](WZ)
8 I desire to do your will,(XA) my God;(XB)
your law is within my heart.”(XC)
9 I proclaim your saving acts(XD) in the great assembly;(XE)
I do not seal my lips, Lord,
as you know.(XF)
10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;
I speak of your faithfulness(XG) and your saving help.
I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness
from the great assembly.(XH)
11 Do not withhold your mercy(XI) from me, Lord;
may your love(XJ) and faithfulness(XK) always protect(XL) me.
12 For troubles(XM) without number surround me;
my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.(XN)
They are more than the hairs of my head,(XO)
and my heart fails(XP) within me.
13 Be pleased to save me, Lord;
come quickly, Lord, to help me.(XQ)
14 May all who want to take my life(XR)
be put to shame and confusion;(XS)
may all who desire my ruin(XT)
be turned back in disgrace.
15 May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”(XU)
be appalled at their own shame.
16 But may all who seek you(XV)
rejoice and be glad(XW) in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
“The Lord is great!”(XX)
17 But as for me, I am poor and needy;(XY)
may the Lord think(XZ) of me.
You are my help(YA) and my deliverer;(YB)
you are my God, do not delay.(YC)
Psalm 41[aj]
For the director of music. A psalm of David.
1 Blessed(YD) are those who have regard for the weak;(YE)
the Lord delivers them in times of trouble.(YF)
2 The Lord protects(YG) and preserves them—(YH)
they are counted among the blessed in the land—(YI)
he does not give them over to the desire of their foes.(YJ)
3 The Lord sustains them on their sickbed(YK)
and restores them from their bed of illness.(YL)
4 I said, “Have mercy(YM) on me, Lord;
heal(YN) me, for I have sinned(YO) against you.”
5 My enemies say of me in malice,
“When will he die and his name perish?(YP)”
6 When one of them comes to see me,
he speaks falsely,(YQ) while his heart gathers slander;(YR)
then he goes out and spreads(YS) it around.
7 All my enemies whisper together(YT) against me;
they imagine the worst for me, saying,
8 “A vile disease has afflicted him;
he will never get up(YU) from the place where he lies.”
9 Even my close friend,(YV)
someone I trusted,
one who shared my bread,
has turned[ak] against me.(YW)
10 But may you have mercy(YX) on me, Lord;
raise me up,(YY) that I may repay(YZ) them.
11 I know that you are pleased with me,(ZA)
for my enemy does not triumph over me.(ZB)
12 Because of my integrity(ZC) you uphold me(ZD)
and set me in your presence forever.(ZE)
13 Praise(ZF) be to the Lord, the God of Israel,(ZG)
from everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and Amen.(ZH)
BOOK II
Psalms 42–72
Psalm 42[al][am]
For the director of music. A maskil[an] of the Sons of Korah.
1 As the deer(ZI) pants for streams of water,(ZJ)
so my soul pants(ZK) for you, my God.
2 My soul thirsts(ZL) for God, for the living God.(ZM)
When can I go(ZN) and meet with God?
3 My tears(ZO) have been my food
day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”(ZP)
4 These things I remember
as I pour out my soul:(ZQ)
how I used to go to the house of God(ZR)
under the protection of the Mighty One[ao]
with shouts of joy(ZS) and praise(ZT)
among the festive throng.(ZU)
5 Why, my soul, are you downcast?(ZV)
Why so disturbed(ZW) within me?
Put your hope in God,(ZX)
for I will yet praise(ZY) him,
my Savior(ZZ) and my God.(AAA)
6 My soul is downcast within me;
therefore I will remember(AAB) you
from the land of the Jordan,(AAC)
the heights of Hermon(AAD)—from Mount Mizar.
7 Deep calls to deep(AAE)
in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
have swept over me.(AAF)
8 By day the Lord directs his love,(AAG)
at night(AAH) his song(AAI) is with me—
a prayer to the God of my life.(AAJ)
9 I say to God my Rock,(AAK)
“Why have you forgotten(AAL) me?
Why must I go about mourning,(AAM)
oppressed(AAN) by the enemy?”(AAO)
10 My bones suffer mortal agony(AAP)
as my foes taunt(AAQ) me,
saying to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”(AAR)
11 Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.(AAS)
Psalm 43[ap]
1 Vindicate me, my God,
and plead my cause(AAT)
against an unfaithful nation.
Rescue me(AAU) from those who are
deceitful and wicked.(AAV)
2 You are God my stronghold.
Why have you rejected(AAW) me?
Why must I go about mourning,(AAX)
oppressed by the enemy?(AAY)
3 Send me your light(AAZ) and your faithful care,(ABA)
let them lead me;(ABB)
let them bring me to your holy mountain,(ABC)
to the place where you dwell.(ABD)
4 Then I will go(ABE) to the altar(ABF) of God,
to God, my joy(ABG) and my delight.(ABH)
I will praise you with the lyre,(ABI)
O God, my God.
5 Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.(ABJ)
Psalm 44[aq]
For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil.[ar]
1 We have heard it with our ears,(ABK) O God;
our ancestors have told us(ABL)
what you did in their days,
in days long ago.(ABM)
2 With your hand you drove out(ABN) the nations
and planted(ABO) our ancestors;
you crushed(ABP) the peoples
and made our ancestors flourish.(ABQ)
3 It was not by their sword(ABR) that they won the land,
nor did their arm bring them victory;
it was your right hand,(ABS) your arm,(ABT)
and the light(ABU) of your face, for you loved(ABV) them.
4 You are my King(ABW) and my God,(ABX)
who decrees[as] victories(ABY) for Jacob.
5 Through you we push back(ABZ) our enemies;
through your name we trample(ACA) our foes.
6 I put no trust in my bow,(ACB)
my sword does not bring me victory;
7 but you give us victory(ACC) over our enemies,
you put our adversaries to shame.(ACD)
8 In God we make our boast(ACE) all day long,(ACF)
and we will praise your name forever.[at](ACG)
9 But now you have rejected(ACH) and humbled us;(ACI)
you no longer go out with our armies.(ACJ)
10 You made us retreat(ACK) before the enemy,
and our adversaries have plundered(ACL) us.
11 You gave us up to be devoured like sheep(ACM)
and have scattered us among the nations.(ACN)
12 You sold your people for a pittance,(ACO)
gaining nothing from their sale.
13 You have made us a reproach(ACP) to our neighbors,(ACQ)
the scorn(ACR) and derision(ACS) of those around us.
14 You have made us a byword(ACT) among the nations;
the peoples shake their heads(ACU) at us.
15 I live in disgrace(ACV) all day long,
and my face is covered with shame(ACW)
16 at the taunts(ACX) of those who reproach and revile(ACY) me,
because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.(ACZ)
17 All this came upon us,
though we had not forgotten(ADA) you;
we had not been false to your covenant.
18 Our hearts had not turned(ADB) back;
our feet had not strayed from your path.
19 But you crushed(ADC) us and made us a haunt for jackals;(ADD)
you covered us over with deep darkness.(ADE)
20 If we had forgotten(ADF) the name of our God
or spread out our hands to a foreign god,(ADG)
21 would not God have discovered it,
since he knows the secrets of the heart?(ADH)
22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep(ADI) to be slaughtered.(ADJ)
23 Awake,(ADK) Lord! Why do you sleep?(ADL)
Rouse yourself!(ADM) Do not reject us forever.(ADN)
24 Why do you hide your face(ADO)
and forget(ADP) our misery and oppression?(ADQ)
25 We are brought down to the dust;(ADR)
our bodies cling to the ground.
26 Rise up(ADS) and help us;
rescue(ADT) us because of your unfailing love.(ADU)
Psalm 45[au]
For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil.[av] A wedding song.(ADV)
1 My heart is stirred by a noble theme
as I recite my verses for the king;
my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.
2 You are the most excellent of men
and your lips have been anointed with grace,(ADW)
since God has blessed you forever.(ADX)
3 Gird your sword(ADY) on your side, you mighty one;(ADZ)
clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.(AEA)
4 In your majesty ride forth victoriously(AEB)
in the cause of truth, humility and justice;(AEC)
let your right hand(AED) achieve awesome deeds.(AEE)
5 Let your sharp arrows(AEF) pierce the hearts(AEG) of the king’s enemies;(AEH)
let the nations fall beneath your feet.
6 Your throne, O God,[aw] will last for ever and ever;(AEI)
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
7 You love righteousness(AEJ) and hate wickedness;(AEK)
therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing(AEL) you with the oil of joy.(AEM)
8 All your robes are fragrant(AEN) with myrrh(AEO) and aloes(AEP) and cassia;(AEQ)
from palaces adorned with ivory(AER)
the music of the strings(AES) makes you glad.
9 Daughters of kings(AET) are among your honored women;
at your right hand(AEU) is the royal bride(AEV) in gold of Ophir.(AEW)
10 Listen, daughter,(AEX) and pay careful attention:(AEY)
Forget your people(AEZ) and your father’s house.
11 Let the king be enthralled by your beauty;(AFA)
honor(AFB) him, for he is your lord.(AFC)
12 The city of Tyre(AFD) will come with a gift,[ax](AFE)
people of wealth will seek your favor.
13 All glorious(AFF) is the princess within her chamber;
her gown is interwoven with gold.(AFG)
14 In embroidered garments(AFH) she is led to the king;(AFI)
her virgin companions(AFJ) follow her—
those brought to be with her.
