Dinner Is Served!

Once David was crowned king, he faced the decision of what to do about a longtime family feud between his house and the house of Saul. Although it was legally acceptable to avenge himself by killing all living relations of Saul, David chose to respond in kindness. He asked who was left of Saul’s household to whom he could show compassion.
Mephibosheth, a grandson of Saul and son of Jonathan, was crippled in both feet. He was brought to Jerusalem and invited to dine at the king’s table as one of the king’s own sons.
How greatly David’s kindness resembles the grace of God: freely given even though it was not deserved. And how greatly Mephibosheth resembles us. We too are cast off, separated from the King, hiding in the desert to conceal our errors.
Come in, all you little Mephibosheths. The table of God’s presence is waiting and dinner is served!
